DIY Christmas Tree Pillow Using a Tote Bag

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again! If you’ve always wanted to make your own décor for the holidays this project if for you. I’m going to show you how to make a super easy Christmas tree pillow that requires zero sewing! That’s right, the pillow form for this project is actually a tote bag! Once you cut off the handles, you have a pillow form ready to be decorated, filled, and glued shut.

Supplies:

100% Cotton Reuseable Wholesale Tote Bag - Red
Green felt
1” Pom-Poms (in various colors)
Hot glue Gun and Glue
Poly-Fil Fiberfill
Christmas Tree Template (You can find one online to print off)
Marker
Scissors
Step 1: Search online for a tree template. I went for a basic tree shape. Once you find one you like, print it off. If you don’t have a printer, you could always draw a basic Christmas tree shape on a piece of paper and cut it out.
Step 2: Lay the Christmas tree template on top of the green felt and trace around it. Then, cut it out.
Step 3: Use scissors to cut off both bag handles. Be sure to cut as close as you can so you don’t have any bulk left behind. Flip the bag around so the opening is now on the bottom.
Step 4: Start by adding glue to the top back of the tree. Make sure you add the glue as close as you can to the edge. Stop adding glue when you get a few inches down. Hot glue can dry quick, so you’ll want to glue the tree on in sections.
Step 5: Place the tree on the center of your bag and press down, making sure the glue really adheres to the bag.
Step 6: Lift up on the tree and add glue to the next section. Again, make sure to add glue as close to the edge as possible. This will keep the felt from rolling up.
Step 7: Lift the tree up again and finish adding glue to the last section of the tree. Press down to adhere.
Step 8: Grab your pom-poms. I used different colored pom-poms to represent my ornaments, but you could choose a specific color theme, or use only one color. Since this is a décor piece you can customize it to fit in any room in your home!
Step 9: Add a dab of glue to the back of a pom-pom. I started at the top of my tree and worked my way down adding pom-poms. You’ll want to space them out, as well as add some to the edge of the tree to give the look of “ornaments” hanging off the Christmas tree. Continue adding pom-poms until the tree is full.
Step 10: Now that the front of your pillow is decorated, it’s time to stuff it! Grab some Poly-Fil Fiberfill. Start by pulling off small pieces of fiberfill and add it to the inside of your pillow. You’ll want to make sure to add filling to the corners. Continue adding pieces of filling to your pillow until it’s nice and full. Remember to allow a little bit of room at the bottom of the pillow since you will need to glue it shut.
Step 11: Start by adding a zig zag of glue to the bottom of the pillow. Stop when you’ve gone about half way down the pillow. Then, use your fingers to press the sides together. Hold it for a minute to allow the glue to dry and set. Add glue to the remaining part of the bag. Finally, press the sides together and hold.
Wasn’t that so easy? I think this DIY Christmas tree pillow using a tote bag is such a great beginner project for people who want to create their own décor but are intimidating by sewing.
